Without a top quality tournament style paintball marker, you will be easily outgunned by players with better weapons in even recreational games.  When it comes to battling it out in the competition field, your gun had better be up to speed.  When shopping for the best paintball gun, the number to choose from can be intimidating if you don’t know what you’re looking for.  The best way to choose a competition paintball marker is to base it off your experience level.  Paintball guns are priced according to this as well with the cheapest markers being the simplest to use and maintain (best for beginner players), and the most expensive guns containing more technology being best for advanced players who can handle their speed and fickle nature.  Competition paintball markers for intermediate level players have a balance of both improved performance and still affordable mid-range pricing.

Shooting a faster paintball gun than your opponents not only beats them to the punch but also allows many more rounds being fired at them in a shorter period of time.  This is why most intermediate and advanced level markers are electronic and fully automatic.  To keep up with the speed of a fully auto firing rate, you will find a gravity fed hopper will slow down the potential of your paintball gun.  For the fastest action, electronic tournament style markers should use electronic loaders to keep up with the ball demand of a super fast gun.  Much like paintball guns, ultra fast electronic loaders are also best chosen based on price, with the more expensive models being the fastest and lightest to match the more expensive higher end guns, however any hopper can be used on any marker.

For the most consistent performance during a tournament match, consider using compressed air as your gun’s power source rather than CO2.  With the rapid shooting that’s required in a timed speedball game, it’s common for Co2 tanks to freeze up, making your gun temporarily inoperable.  Hpa tanks use compressed air and do not rely on the fickle nature of CO2 allowing for consistent performance the whole time.  Even though hpa tanks cost considerably more than CO2, the improved performance they deliver is worth it.  While most beginner and intermediate level markers can use either CO2 or compressed air, higher end tournament style guns have more sensitive internals and can only use the stable temperature of compressed air; CO2 can cause damage to these paintball guns.

The speed and aggressiveness of tournament style paintball will demand you to be fast and agile on your feet.  This means the clothing you wear should be lightweight and not binding.  Paintball apparel that’s too tight can restrict your motion and be uncomfortable and distracting.  Loose fitting paintball jerseys and pants are designed for their freedom of movement but also extra protection as well.  The best paintball uniforms offer extra padding over impact zones while still remaining comfortable and stylish.  Matching paintball apparel makes your team stand out and lends an experienced, professional look even to less advanced players.

Besides the mandatory paintball mask, most players who compete in tournaments wear very little protective gear.  These competitors are not willing to sacrifice any speed of movement for the little bit of extra protection it may provide.  While paintball chest protectors tend to be either too binding or bulky for speedball, elbow and knee pads are the most common protective gear worn by competitors if any.  These items are worn to protect against the environment from extra rough play rather than the sting of incoming paintballs.  The extra padding sewn into jerseys and paintball pants are often enough for most tournament players.
