The only mandatory protective paintball gear is the mask; the only real danger in playing paintball is the possibility of getting hit directly in the eye.  This would cause permanent blindness and is the reason why paintball goggles are a ‘must have’ piece of equipment.  However protecting your other body parts, while not essential, definitely makes the game more enjoyable – and the players more daring!  Paintball helmets and body armor not only offer a more tactical look but also offer protection to areas often left uncovered.

Other popular protective gear includes arm, elbow and shin guards, paintball gloves and even full body armor or a paintball chest protector.  When buying this type of equipment, make sure it’s made of light, breathable material that’s pliable and not too stiff.  If your protective equipment hinders your movement and makes you an easy target, it may not hurt to get hit but you won’t be playing very long!
